Many people with Depression don’t get the help they need because they think their symptoms mean something else.

Ijeoma sat impatiently in the hospital waiting area careful to keep a good distance between her and the next patient. Her face mask clung uncomfortably to her nose and chin – already damp with re breathed air.
She hadn’t wanted to come – what with COVID -19 everywhere in Abuja. But she was a Custom’s Officer and so was able to move freely despite the lock-down plus she had been in the vicinity.
This would be a quick one. She only needed Doctor Musa’s opinion on her symptoms.
She rubbed her neck with well-manicured hands. She had been thinking of leaving the hospital when her number was called over the hospital’s queue management system jolting her to her feet. It was her turn now.
Ijeoma sat in the disinfected consulting room alone and managed to smile at her doctor through her face mask. He wasn’t there in person but sat in another consulting room some distance away. What were her complaints? She bared her mind to the image on the screen in front of her.
After the virtual consultation she got up to go to the lab as he had instructed.
This was all probably unnecessary she thought while rummaging through her bag in search of her ATM card. She had malaria most likely. Fatigue, loss of appetite, body aches and pain. What else could it be?
The results were ready 2 hours later. Ijeoma listened to her doctor in disbelief.
Not malaria or Typhoid? Really? What then was wrong with her?

Depression is more than sadness. It is an actual medical diagnosis with signs and symptoms like malaria or hypertension.
People who are depressed are not just sad, they’ve lost interest in life generally. They’re tired all the time and seem never to have enough energy to do anything. They might lose appetite or eat more than usual. They might be unable to sleep enough or sleep too much.
Someone might be depressed and not even know it. This is called hidden depression.

‘’I think it’s just stress’’ Doctor Musa was saying. ‘’Try to rest and change your lifestyle…’’ Ijeoma appeared to be listening but her mind was elsewhere.
The last few weeks had indeed been stressful. The lock-down, managing her 3 little children, her runaway nanny. She sighed and after a few more minutes thanked the doctor and stood to leave.
Coming to the hospital, especially during a pandemic, and leaving without even Panadol was like going to a stream several miles away to fetch water and then getting there only to leave with an empty bucket, Ijeoma thought, and her lips wrinkled in a dry smile.
Her phone rang and she glanced at its screen before answering it. It was her husband. ’’ Hello?’’ She hadn’t been happy before – now she felt slightly worse.
She listened to him rant then managed to squeeze in a few words. No she had not gone anywhere else apart from the hospital. Yes she was on her way home.
Ijeoma got into her car and put the gear in reverse. Yes Tony, her husband, was definitely controlling. She waved to the security man before pulling into the main road. It was not his fault, she just had to learn not to aggravate him.

Depression is not caused by any one thing in isolation. A lot of things may combine to cause it; negative life’s circumstances, imbalance in certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters, low thyroid hormone production called hypothyroidism for example. Even some prescription medicines.

Ijeoma was back in the hospital 2 weeks later in spite of herself. She wasn’t any better, in fact she was much worse. She had no fever, cough or diarrhoea or anything like that. She was just tired, tired in her mind. Even tired of…living. Dr Musa was wrong. There definitely was something wrong with her.
The doctor listened to her complaints and asked her some questions – questions she felt were irrelevant but answered nonetheless.
She was sent for more tests and waited with bated breath for 4 hours for her results.
She felt deflated when Dr Musa said that all her results were normal – again.
Her disappointment turned to anger when he suggested she see a Psychiatrist.

Many people with depression mistakenly think that their symptoms are caused by something else – like a physical ailment. Because of this they don’t see a doctor and struggle needlessly, sometimes for years.
The notion that depression means someone has gone ‘mad’ or that it happens to people who are ‘weak’ is probably one reason why many depressed people might be in denial. This is completely false.
It’s really important for anyone with depression NOT to see their illness as a personal failing or flaw in their character. This is simply not true. Would you blame a loved one for having a stroke? In the same way, people with depression are not to blame for their illness.

Ijeoma sat alone in her room that night and sobbed. She had stormed out of the hospital that day in anger. Of course she hadn’t booked to see the Psychiatrist. She was definitely not crazy.
She brought out her phone to book an appointment to see another doctor when it rang. It was her mother.
Ijeoma was close to her mother and they talked all the time. She had even told her about how she had been feeling this past month. If not for the lock-down, she knew her mother would have flown in from Lagos.
She did not expect her to disagree with her decision about seeing the Psychiatrist.

Ijeoma eventually saw the psychiatrist and was prescribed medications but stopped after she was unable to tolerate its side effects.
She improved significantly after seeing the psychotherapist.

Having a good work life balance is key to preventing depression. This means finding the right balance between work and leisure. It’s important to incorporate regular exercise, a balanced diet and time spent doing things one considers valuable.

Yea your very right. Mental health is very important especially for we men . We have been told to be strong , fearless ,unemotional etc from a young age that anything less is unmanly. But it is good to know that we can still acknowledge that we need to watch triggers that may be affecting our state of mind before they manifest into depression, suicidal tendencies and the like. Not really. Aside from the initial effort, money and time it took to set up the blog i wouldn’t say blogging is time consuming.
